Actually, the Catholic Church teaches that condoms and birth control are a sin, and for good reason. People think that the Church's teachings are outdated, and unlivable, but here's the funny thing. Contraception doesn't always work, and many of the contraceptives currently employed have a variety of mechanisms to be effective, the last of which is to be abortifacient, which means that even contraceptives can abort babies. Besides the fact that our culture is moving more and more towards secularization, it's pretty clear that the mentality that embraces contraceptives is much more likely to also embrace abortion. Whether it be out of "need" or simply for the sake of convenience, abortion is always morally illicit, and therefore, the mentality that approaches sex as if it is merely pleasure--another aspect of life to be enjoyed, with no consequences, with no responsibilities--the more that our culture will start adopting methods such as the RU-486 (abortion pill) to "fix slip ups" when condoms break or someone forgets to take their pill. The fact of the matter is that life is sacred, and without an awareness of this inherent sanctity, our culture will continue to travel the road to perdition without even a wince of hesitation. I appreciate your concern for the babies, and I wholeheartedly embrace such concern myself. That's precisely why I think that we should stop pointing the finger at their mother, and start making more people aware of the great need to look at these children as a reason to be more aware of our own actions. They are precious gifts from God, and they ought to be raised as such. Likewise, we all ought to stop approaching sex from a losers mentality--i.e. everyone HAS to do it before marriage and inevitably WILL. We need to start teaching our kids about abstinence, and stop enabling them to become sexually active through a whole host of things that increase their likelihood of becoming promiscuous. From the music they listen to, to the television shows and ads that they watch, the to conversations that they get into and the internet sites that they view, if they don't have people constantly affirming what is right and wrong in their lives, how can we expect their consciences to be properly formed. They too deserve to be raised with dignity....every day of their lives!
