Although I must say that I think Zara Phillps looks hideous in that outfit. Its not the hat that looks bad though its the skirt and blouse…..really unflattering.

hey sam, perhaps you and “a” should get married and wear heinous hats to the ceremony. relax… this article is supposed to be funny, and youre going all “politically correct” on it and sticking up for this horrid tradition. yes, it is tradition, yes it is often a display of over the top ugly hats. the point of the article is to show how wacko us brits can be and how funny these hats are.

go buy one of these hats at a flea market and revel in the fact that youre actually the ignorant one.

Poster A really was right, you are showing a tremendous amount of ignorance. The hats aren’t worn to the market to buy groceries, they’re worn as tradition to a specific event, they’re meant to be loud, extravagant and over-the-top, it’s a bit of fun! No the royal family do not normally dress like that and anyway Royal Ascot isn’t just for the royal family, all women admitted to the inner enclosure must wear hats and many outside of this area join in the spirit also.
At the end of the day how many celebratory outfits can you point to that don’t look a little silly taken out of context..a santa suit in august? The loud “patriotic” clothing of 4th July celebrations ?(yes dressing like a giant flag does make you look ridiculous and no painting your face to match doesn’t help you pull it off any better!)

And commenting on the size of someone’s behind really is juvenile.

I wouldn’t dream of wearing any of these hats, but they ARE neat. As fashion accessories, they’re somewhat ridiculous. But as art, they’re pretty fab.

I love Jodie Skyes’ parasol. Minus the hat, I think the old-fashioned parasol + modern dress could be very cute.
