Birthcontrol pills may undermine women’s natural defences against cancer

Women, listen up! I know millions of women across the globe use pills as a birth control method. It does great things for the body: reduces the PMS syndrome, takes away the acnea problems, makes breast grow larger and other stuff.

Just like any other drug, birth control pills (which consist in hormones like estrogen) have side effects.

Researchers say that estrogen has an important role in fighting off infections such as the common cold and it also can “start a biochemical chain reaction that undermines women’s natural defenses against cancer”.

Wait! That’s not all. It seems that “exposure to high levels can trigger genetic mutations that can cause cancer.” So, what are they saying is that pills can cause to cancer in time.

‘We found oestrogen plays an important role in generating the diversity in the immune system that helps our bodies fight off a range of infections. While this is beneficial for a healthy immune response, prolonged exposure will lead to genetic changes in other parts of the body which have been found to cause cancer.’ – Dr. Svend Petersen-Mahrt, at Cancer Research UK’s Clare Hall Laboratories in South Mimms, Hertfordshire.

Dr. Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at Cancer Research UK, said: ‘This finding is very important because scientists have long wrestled with the task of explaining the link between estrogen and cancer. The link is particularly pertinent to women receiving increased amounts of oestrogen for prolonged periods, during HRT for instance.’ – The Daily Mail
